About the director
Gabriel Carnick (she/her) is an award winning queer filmmaker with more than a decade of experience. She's deeply passionate about social justice, queer stories, and films that center the voices of undercapitalized groups, including women, LGBTQ+ folks, and members of the global majority (BIPOC) community through both narrative and documentary work. Gabriel's work is grounded in the belief that transformative art has the capacity to inspire broad, long lasting change.
Filmmaker's note
My name is Gabriel Carnick, and I am the Director of BELLY BELLY. Much like the characters our story follows, I am a queer person in constant internal battle with body dysmorphia, gender representation (though I identify as cis, not non-binary), impulse control issues, and mental illness. This story, written by the lead actor and producer, Loren Hayes, spoke to me on many levels. I was enormously inspired by the opportunity to view weighty concepts of identity, consumption, and the terrible isolation of disordered eating through a subversive and unconventional lens. The queer community has a long history with horror and thriller cinema, and I believe that pieces like this really open the doors of communication and vulnerability- with ourselves, with our queer siblings, and with the broader audience.
